Hopkins looked at the cloak on her office wall and heaved a sigh. Kareena Chais would be here in ten minutes or so and she still had no idea how to handle that meeting. It was one thing to tell strangers that their loved ones were never coming home, but how the hell did you have the discussion with a subordinate about how much time they could legally take off to get beyond the grief that would haunt them forever?

She leaned back in her chair and glanced over at the little USB she'd placed at the top of her bag. When Dave had been there, asking for the files Mark had been working on, it had been her duty as Chief to keep a backup of everything he took so that if proper permissions and procedures were ever called into question they could cross reference the things he had against the things she had allowed him to have.

She smothered the itching between her shoulder blades. It had been growing ever since she'd gotten back from Charleston last night. She knew the urge well, it had been her driving force through all her years as an active detective. She wanted to leave this office, go home to the secure laptop Jeffries had given her, and plug that USB in. It was the only way she had been able to think of that would have allowed her to look into what Violet had been doing without it being traceable. If Jeffries was right, if the FBI was wrong, if her hunch wasn't way off, then she knew she could not under any circumstances try to get new research from the VCB's database.

“So I'll start with that and see where we go.”

“Start with what?”

Hopkins jumped and found Alma standing in her open doorway.

“Sorry, Chief, I didn't mean to startle you.”

“No, no, Dr Mavros. I was just lost in thought. Trying to figure out what best to say to Ms Chais.”

Alma nodded. “That's why I am here.”

Hopkins' gaze sharpened. “Of course. I always forget that you two are, er, together.”

Alma's lips tilted in a half smile. “So what is your plan so far?”

Hopkins sat straighter as Alma came closer and decided better to be safe than sorry by choosing the exact words Alma would have heard coming in.

“I'll start with asking her what she wants to do and see where we can go from there.”

Alma nodded. “That's fine, but I think you'll need to be firm on the limitations.”

Something in the woman's voice made Hopkins sure that she knew more of Kareena's plans.

Which is perfectly normal. They live together, for Christ's sake. Stop seeing monsters in every co-worker or you'll sully your finds.

“Am I interrupting?”

Kareena's voice was softer, more broken, than Hopkins had been anticipating, and she felt herself tense automatically. Sometimes being the one in charge really and truly sucked.

“Hi, babe,” Alma said before Hopkins could do more than swallow. “How are you? Is the headache all gone?”
